Searching for coins with a metal detector underwater. Underwater search with a metal detector

If you want to choose an underwater metal detector, then now is the time to choose a model and get ready for the summer. In this article, you will see a brief overview of the most popular and lesser-known models, which I will briefly describe.

There are two types of underwater metal detectors; this is an amphibious metal detector, with the ability to walk both underwater and on land. But, usually the maximum immersion depth of such metal detectors is up to 5 meters. And an underwater metal detector that has the ability to fully dive into water, 20-30 meters, and is not afraid of salt water. While an amphibious metal detector can detect salt water.

Amphibians have an LCD screen, which does not allow them to be deeply immersed, as there is a high probability that there will be damage from water pressure. And many devices were drowned in such a search. A new amphibian model appeared in 2012, the Minelab CTX 3030, which I described in great detail.

Whereas in a conventional underwater metal detector, you receive all the information through headphones, and adjustments are made through rotary controls.

Just a moment!!! I already have an article on our blog - in it I give simple and understandable advice to a beginner when choosing his first device.

Searching for coins, jewelry, and artifacts underwater is an effective way to increase your chances of finding more targets. Also, combining searches on land and in water is especially pleasant in the summer, when you have the opportunity not only to engage in your favorite hobby, but also to take a dip or swim.

Underwater snooping is different from regular snooping and may be more difficult than you thought. In addition, you need to buy a waterproof metal detector. When you have the right detector and follow these rules, you're bound to make some interesting finds.

1. Plan ahead.

It is very important to properly plan your search trip so as not to waste your time and energy. The first thing to consider is the time of year you go digging. It is logical that you need to look for something in the water when it has already warmed up. Of course, if you have a reliable wetsuit, you can search in the cold season. Please also pay attention to weather reports. Searching underwater during a rainstorm or hurricane is unsafe.

2. Select where you will search.

To increase your chances of making good finds, you need to figure out where the most crowded areas of the beach are. This also applies to underwater search. Usually the most finds are found where people “walk on water,” that is, the depth where they do not yet swim. Also good for searching are the berths of pleasure boats, catamarans and the like. If the beach is touristy, it is worth checking out the areas around water attractions or places equipped for water sports (diving towers).

3. Learn underwater search techniques.

When you're just starting out, you need to become familiar with instrument search methods and techniques. You can, for example, follow a line along the shore, moving at meter intervals. Check all natural depressions and holes in the bottom, as they may contain something valuable. Underwater searchers also sometimes use special scoops - narrow ones so as not to stir up mud, and if they are searching shallowly - then scubas (a sieve on a stick) and floating rafts with an improvised sieve, which help separate targets from the mud.

4. Search during the daytime.

Instrumental search in water is already quite a difficult task. At night, everything becomes much more difficult, since visibility under water is much worse than in the air, and even strong flashlights are not always very helpful. So if you set your sights on underwater searching, start early in the morning or when the day is already in full swing.

5. You don't have to go scuba diving.

Before starting an underwater treasure hunt, many recommend taking a few scuba diving lessons. But for this you must have special equipment, which you don’t always have money to buy. However, judging by the experience of many search engines, taking diving lessons is not necessary. Most targets are hidden at a depth of 1-1.5 meters, and in order to find them, you do not need to buy scuba gear.

Treasure hunting underwater: exploring new horizons

Hello, dear readers. I haven’t posted reports on treasure hunts for a long time, and I’ll explain why. I went to the seaside to relax, and also explored new horizons of treasure hunting. In general, there was no time for forest trips, nevertheless, I expanded the halo of my knowledge and practical experience in such a matter as... underwater search! I tell you in detail...Leading your diary on YouTube, I made friends with many comrades and like-minded people... Somehow I was intrigued by one friend who looks for coins, artifacts and relics under the water! After contacting him, I told him that I was intrigued by underwater search and would not mind trying it out in practice. Our conversation lasted for a couple of hours. I asked a lot: where is the best place to start, how to make my device underwater, what to wear, how to search underwater... having pretty much tired my interlocutor with answers.

Underwater search is carried out underwater, also with a metal detector.

Where to start underwater search

Underwater search begins with an inspection of the main equipment - a metal detector. First of all, I had to send my E-Track for improvement, which took two weeks. Much was redone, only the “brains” remained, which were placed in a moisture-proof box. We changed the battery box and replaced the original battery with three AA batteries. To search underwater, I had to buy an 8-inch coil, which will make it easier to detect the target.

"Underwater E-Track" searches underwater

I also had to remove mine and change them to wired underwater. All cable entries into the unit were redone so that water would not get in there. In turn, in order to search not under water, two rods were made to the upper rod: a short one, for searching under water, and a long one, for standard . We also had to send a standard coil so that the plug could be remade.

I had to give up wireless headphones

Hook system for underwater search

While the device was being redesigned, I had to start assembling the “Hook system” for underwater search. For this I bought: 3 food pipes with a diameter of 150 mm. two meters each, and 4 elbows, so that in the end I get a rectangle of 120x70 cm. I put all the pipe joints on a moisture-resistant glue - sealant, and glued this entire structure onto a sheet of foam plastic, 5 cm thick, and density 30. When the glue dried, I got an air receiver.

DIY Hook system

On one side of the pipe I drilled two 13 mm holes so that I could insert the fittings that are used in tubeless wheels for cars, and another hole on the other side. Also, on four sides, I attached small rings with drawstrings so that a rope or various devices could be attached to them.

Inside the structure, I bought a 10-liter sealed food box in order to place a 105 l/min low-pressure compressor and a 33 Ampere gel battery in it. After talking with a friend and consulting, I bought two batteries and a charger for them. I connected the compressor and the receiver with a food-grade flexible tube, at the outlet from the receiver I attached a five-meter long tube, at the end of which I attached a lung valve, which is used by scuba divers.

Equipment for underwater search

To stay in the water for several hours and dive to a depth of 4 - 5 meters, I had to buy wetsuit 7+7, with the expectation that I will dive in the fall and spring. To swim properly underwater, you need loading, so I bought belt with 14 kg weights. To see well and swim normally, I had to buy mask and fins.

When testing the system, I encountered a problem such as hard bottom cover; for this I had to buy a garden shovel. Also, to explore the coastline, I purchased a beach search.

First discoveries underwater

It took me two (2) months to collect all the equipment! I had to redo a lot, improve, study, study and study. And, having learned to confidently swim underwater and tested all systems and components in every possible way, I decide to carry out my first underwater search. I choose the Southern Bug River as a place to search, or rather, an old beach where life once flourished.

The place of my first underwater searches is the Southern Bug River

One morning, I load all the equipment into the car and drive to the search site. Having driven to the beach, I realized that local shepherds were already waiting for me. But, it doesn’t matter, having answered all their questions about what I want to do, I unload everything from the car and prepare for the underwater search.

I just went into the water and turned on the device, and the whole ground beeps, where I don’t put the device, there’s a signal everywhere! So many... beer caps And canning lids with jars, I didn’t even raise it in places where people used to celebrate the May holidays :) For several decades, the bottom of this beach has simply been covered with metal products. I think this is bad, both for the ecosystem and for the people themselves.

Along with this garbage, coins, late tips and modern walkers are also often found. I don’t want to describe each of these goals, since there were a lot of them. Also, after several hours of underwater searching, I became the owner of 300 grams of cargo from different types of fishing gear.

Loads from fishing gear - what would you do without it under water?

But, most importantly, for all my work, Grandpa Neptune opened it for me... gold earring And chain. At the end of the day, I also managed to raise the underwater watch from Casio.

In addition to the finds, there is something to be happy about underwater: the underwater element is very beautiful, although it is littered. Fish swam up to me several times, wondering what I was looking for here and who I was. I didn’t tell them, but having dived enough and drained two batteries, I stopped my water campaign. As always, I upload my finds and take photographs.

Final finds of the day in one photo

I think that my first underwater search was a great success, I also discovered another form of relaxation and good time, having finally made friends with my metal detector with water! Satisfied with my first dive underwater with MD, I invite you to dive into the depths of the water with me... Watch my video report:

Beach search is probably the only type of search where almost anyone can find high-value items within a short drive of their home. The most important thing is that you can look for jewelry on the beach regularly: after all, valuables are also lost with enviable consistency.

Techniques for finding jewelry in fresh water differ from those used in salt water. In this guide we will go into detail about searching in fresh water.

Freshwater bodies are usually much smaller in size than saltwater ones, and there are also fewer problem areas. There is definitely no soil mineralization. Often, swimming areas are limited by buoys, the very ones you “don’t swim beyond,” so the search area is conveniently limited to them. You can also lie on the beach and watch where people are swimming, so that you can examine the bottom with a metal detector early in the morning.

Metal detector

The two most important factors when choosing a metal detector for beach and underwater treasure hunting are: waterproof elements containing electronic circuits, as well as the ability to adjust discrimination. This last requirement is very important, as setting the discrimination helps to avoid unnecessary time and effort digging out bobby pins, corks, aluminum cans, nails and other junk.

Salt water speeds up the corrosion process on small iron targets, causing the debris to disappear within a few months. In freshwater areas, a bobby pin lost in the 1930s is still waiting for you to discover. True, its appearance will probably cause you a severe attack of disappointment if your metal detector did not reject this target, and you still retrieved it.

Metal detectors VLF have proven to be the best option for freshwater detectors due to their high sensitivity to jewelry and ability to ignore debris. Multi-frequency detectors such as Minelab and Fisher are also a good choice if you don't plan on looking for jewelry at sea.

Experienced searchers often “upgrade” conventional metal detectors, making them waterproof, and conduct searches in water. But for beginners, it’s still better to immediately take an underwater waterproof device. "MDRegion" can offer such metal detectors from almost every major global brand. Choose in our online store.

Weight and balance may influence the final decision. Remember that the waterproof housing and fairly heavy non-floating coil add weight to the device. For such models, sometimes you need to take care of the fastening. It makes work easier if the control unit is removable and the coil is separate.

A very popular option is a metal detector with straight barbell. An S-shaped bar is not comfortable underwater, but a straight bar is balanced and easier to move. Therefore, a straight bar allows you to search for a longer time (the search engine does not get tired as much as with an S-shaped one.

Size search coil will depend on the location of the search. Large coils, as usual, cover larger areas and provide greater detection depth, but in water they move slowly, and in littered areas they can miss standing targets. Small reels also have their pros and cons.

Accessories

After choosing a metal detector, you will need to decide on accessories. Your arsenal may include: digging tools, a mesh bag or finds bag, and a sand sifter. If you plan to wander along the shore, then buy a fishing suit with boots, and for underwater searching you will need either a swimming mask with a snorkel or scuba gear.

When searching on dry sand, you will need a scoop. It can be either metal or plastic. The plastic one is convenient to bring directly to the metal detector coil and check for the presence of a target.

To search in shallow water, a sand sifter with a long handle is required. This is a special device like a metal net.

You can bring a search magnet along with you on your search. It will help clear the place of rusty junk.

Search location

Now you are ready. The question is where to go to look. Well, the first thing that comes to mind is municipal beaches and, in general, all the famous beaches in the city/town. Then there are the private beaches. Then there are sand quarries - people also like to swim here.

You can also ask all your friends where they prefer to swim and whether they know any “wild” or abandoned beaches.

Here is a rough list of areas on the beach where you should look first:

  • Places where mothers splash with their children (“paddling pool”, shallow water). It is known that ladies love to use sunscreen or tanning creams. In combination with water, these creams do their dirty work - rings and bracelets slip off.
  • Places where people "go". Those who cannot swim usually go into the water up to their waists.
  • Dry sand. It is clear that sometimes when unfolding and folding blankets, towels and blankets, the rings get caught and “sink” in the sand.

Once you have established discrimination, do not increase the level of discrimination. Remember that corks give the same signal as jewelry.

Bottom line

If you want to enjoy successful finds, then searching in fresh water and on the beach is just for you. This exciting hobby can be indulged in anywhere in the country. Of course, with the right equipment from MDRegion.
